Spectrochemical studies on iridium complexes. I. Tervalent-iridium. complexes

Absorption spectra of six tervalent-Ir complexes were measured in aq. soln.; all complexes have 3 absorption bands. In addn. to these bands the salts which contain pyridine show a special absorption band which shifted towards longer wave length compared with the band of pyridine itself. This means the unstabilization of pyridine mol. by coördination. The third absorption bands numbered from the longer wave length which are characteristic of the neg. radicals coordinated in the trans position are in 80-100 × 1013 sec.-1 and more bathochromic than those of many Co complexes which are in 120 × 1013. The first absorption bands have the relatively low extinction coeffs. log ε = 1.2 and arc shifted towards the longer wave lengths in the following order [IrCl6] > [IrCl4(C2O4)] > [IrpyCl3 (C2O4)] > [IrpyCl (C2O4)2], [IrpyCl5] > [Irpy2Cl4].
